Film Screening: A Cartoonist in the Classroom

Sponsored by Philadelphia Alumni Writers House

Thursday, October 13, 2011
6 p.m.

Legendary cartoonist and former hula dancer, Lynda Barry has been teaching her Writing the Unthinkable workshop to captivated fans across the country for over a decade.  A Cartoonist in the Classroom explores the effects the workshop has on students with little or no knowledge of her work - a group of Haverford College students, an English as a Second Language class at the Community College of Philadelphia, and finally behind bars at a Philadelphia prison.  With enthusiasm and humor Lynda solicits the imagery of her student writers’ early days.  She inspires with theories and stories that illustrate her belief that storytelling is an inherent biological function rather than a talent that few possess.  Lines between college students, those struggling with ESL and inmates are erased as original, “homemade” tales materialize in all three contexts. Q&A with the filmakers to follow and pizza will be served. Free and open to the public.

This event is open to the public.
