Adapted from Frank Wedekind’s controversial play (written in 1891, and originally banned in Germany) Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s rock musical explores the transition a young person makes from innocence to experience in an unforgiving world. It explores themes such as sexuality, abortion, child abuse and suicide. Powerful, poignant, and passionate, Spring Awakening won 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and was named “Best Musical of the Year” by The New York Times.

[One of those on the 2007 Tony list was Lancaster’s own Jonathan Groff, who was nominated as “Best Leading Actor in a Musical” for his work in this show.]
